Do you know?

Tiktok has turned itself into a recruitment platform also.

Can’t believe it? Just last month in July 2021, Tiktok ran a pilot with many companies.

Companies uploaded their recruitment requirements, their hiring requirements, job positions

onto the platform.

Job seekers could upload their short visual resumes. The best candidates were put into the hiring process.

We already know that LinkedIn is the master of all social media when it comes to recruitment and hiring. Every minute three people every minute get hired because of LinkedIn.

And I know countless examples of recruiters reaching out to job seekers on Instagram DMs already.

Most of us are already on social media, right? Billions of people are already on social media.

But they are not active. They only use it for personal use and they haven’t realised its full potential for job search.

In this video, I will exactly tell you why you should consider social media as the most powerful strategy for a job search in 2021.

When it comes to hiring, there are two sides, right? One is a recruiter’s side hiring manager’s side and one is the job seeker’s side.

Hiring manager’s point of view

Let’s look at the hiring manager side first. So that we can reverse engineer the process and understand their side first.

The hiring manager is as desperate to find the right candidate in the shortest amount of time. The hiring manager wants to get the job done as soon as possible and get the best candidate.

90% of recruiters already use LinkedIn to search for the best candidates and the people who are already looking for jobs. 70% of them have admitted that they have rejected candidates just based on social media profiles; not just LinkedIn they look at all the profiles.

Why?

They want to know the person behind the resume. Obviously, they have your resume. But they want to know the personality, the characteristics, the character, other skills, hobbies.

They want to know the person behind the resume. So, many times they use your social media channels to understand what kind of person you are.

Also if they find that someone in their own company is already connected with you, already following you on social media, interacting with you, then they know that they can get a referral.

They can do a background check on you with that person. So they naturally find you interesting.

If they find many people following you, interacting with you, you are also interacting with many people, you have many recommendations. They want to know the social proof about the kind of skills, character and personality you are.

They also look for negative signals. For example, references to illicit activities or as simple as spelling errors which will convey that you are careless.

Social media: Secret strategy for job seekers

Now we know why recruiters are using social media. We have to understand why job seekers should use social media to its fullest potential.

I’ll give you several reasons.

Social media profiles more powerful than resume

Your social media profiles are much more powerful than a simple resume right?

Resumes are essential, they will never go away. Because they give a very quick

understanding for the recruiter about what kind of person you are, the skills, experiences. But you are much more than that right?

So, why not use YouTube for a short visual resume? Why not write a technical article on the LinkedIn portal?

If you are a writer why not have a separate blog? If you are an artist, a visual person then why not use Instagram, Pinterest to put out your latest work?

If you do painting as a hobby why not put that out as well? If you have a solid business plan made why not use SlideShare and put it as a PPT?

Why not put images, videos of your project. If you have certifications, recommendations,

testimonials from clients, why not put all those somewhere on your social media?

You never know which one will recruiter find interesting and immediately sends your message.

Based on your activity on social media. Suppose you are liking, commenting on the best companies in that industry. You are interacting with people, it shows that you learning on social media. You are constantly staying updated.

Social media to stay up to date about industry

Based on your activity, recruiters will find a lot of things about you. Why not follow the best people, the best companies industry associations in your industry?

Why not interact on those articles, comment with your ideas, why not share those articles?

All this activity will help you stay up to date in your industry.

This will help you in two ways. One is in your interviews, you will know what is happening latest in your industry if that is one of the question comes up.

Second is you’ll also know what’s happening in your industry to plan your career path. What’s your next move, which type of certifications you should do. What are you lacking, where is the industry heading and how you should plan your career.

If you are active on LinkedIn, you will anyway find many job opportunities being posted by companies, hiring managers or other employees of the company. You can immediately grab those, apply to those.

Network to get referrals

If you continue to use social media not just as a passive listener also start commenting posting and also start networking with influencers, other professionals in your industry doing similar roles as you. You will be able to understand what kind of companies, what kind of roles are possible for you.

If they find you interesting, they might refer you in their own company.

Lookout for best companies to work for

Last but not the least. If you follow many companies in your industry, in your work area, you’ll already know what are those best companies, companies who have best culture, highest growing companies to look for.

You will already know much more about the companies so that you can tap the job opportunities of those companies.

If you have a job interview with a specific company you can already know much more about that company, the recent happenings before that job interview.
